Refurbished equipment aids in positive cost-to-benefit ratio

At a time when costs for food production are at an all-time high, many food processors are looking to secondhand machinery dealers to save money. Food processors may prefer used equipment because it can meet a production need faster than the eight to 10-week turnaround time often required for new equipment.

Factory-refurbished equipment offers food processors a cost-effective option to purchase used equipment that has been brought up to current control and safety standards, and refurbished to its original design capacity.
But buying uncertified used equipment comes with unforeseen risks, depending on the previous application of the machinery and the level of maintenance and service it received. Purchasing refurbished equipment from the original manufacturer eliminates these risks and ensures equipment will operate as it is intended.

JBT FoodTech aftermarket service groups around the world actively purchase equipment from food processors; overhaul the machinery to bring every part up to date with current control and safety standards; and resell the equipment back into the marketplace. Factory-refurbished equipment also comes with a six-month warranty similar to a new equipment warranty, a guarantee not offered by used equipment brokers.

“With the factory-supplied quality and six-month warranty, the cost of refurbished equipment can total 30 percent to 40 percent less than the new equipment price,” says Charlie Rogers, customer services manager for JBT FoodTech.

Food processors can trust that refurbished equipment will operate efficiently knowing that the original manufacturer service technicians have approved it for resale. Factory-refurbished equipment is an affordable option, particularly for growing food processors that may have less initial capital available to invest in equipment.

‘Like new’ instead of ‘as is’

Used equipment purchased from a general equipment broker or directly from a food processor in a liquidation sale means purchasing the equipment as is. There may not be documentation of maintenance performed on the equipment in the past; of current standards compliance on components or of guaranteed longevity of the equipment.

Service technicians approve refurbished equipment for resale and include documentation of maintenance that processors will not receive if purchasing equipment from a secondhand machinery dealer.
“JBT FoodTech aftermarket service groups mainly purchase used equipment that meets certain age and condition requirements — for instance, equipment that was manufactured within the last 10 years,” says Lars-Ove Larsson, special project service manager for JBT FoodTech. “After all components are refurbished or replaced and the equipment is brought up to current control and safety standards, the equipment will have an additional 10 to 12 years of efficient operation.”

Negotiating power

Food processors can leverage the value of used equipment by selling it back to the original manufacturer when purchasing a replacement line from the same manufacturer. Some processing equipment owners may make the mistake of selling used equipment in liquidation sales or to used equipment brokers, or they may let equipment sit dormant in factory yards. These options waste the equipment’s investment equity. Selling gently used processing equipment back to the original manufacturer can make a new equipment purchase more affordable.

Service technicians approve refurbished equipment for resale and include documentation of maintenance that processors will not receive if purchasing equipment from a secondhand machinery dealer.
“JBT FoodTech can equip secondhand machines with new aftermarket components, automation enhancements and controls software,” says Bill Bayliss, aftermarket business manager for JBT FoodTech. “Processors can buy a factory-reconditioned machine at substantial savings from new equipment prices with the same confidence as buying new.”

Food processors who purchase factory-refurbished equipment receive like-new quality from a trusted brand. Those who wisely use existing equipment for negotiating power when buying new equipment can save on the price of new equipment while ensuring the equipment they are replacing goes to good use.
