Cold-pressed system doubles d-Limonene recovery

By Danny Milla, new product development manager, JBT FoodTech

With the citrus industry’s growth tightly tied to the amount of consumer consumption in the world, processors are focused on energy and cost savings, and challenged to find alternate sources of revenue. Many have found that selling d-Limonene — the main component in citrus oil — to be an important part of their secondary, by-products business.

D-Limonene is a natural solvent used in a variety of cleaning products, and has steadily increased in demand over the past five years. Orange peel can be cold-pressed to recover oil used for flavor and fragrance and to recover food-grade d-Limonene. Processors can produce technical grade d-Limonene through a steam distillation process.

For citrus processors interested in increasing their oil recovery or removing residual d-Limonene from wastewater, the READYGo d-LIMONENE recovery system from JBT FoodTech is a cost-effective, modular solution. READYGo d-LIMONENE can easily be integrated into a fully automated plant, saving processors the significant investment needed to implement a fully engineered system. Multiple modules can be added where more capacity is needed.

In addition to the simple implementation, READYGo d-LIMONENE has a high recovery rate, offering processors an alternative revenue stream with reduced capital investment.

Penny saved, penny earned

Processors typically weigh the operating expenses of the oil recovery system against the potential gross revenue when determining which oil recovery technique to implement. Although the selling price of cold-pressed oil is slightly higher than its thermally processed counterpart, READYGo d-LIMONENE has the ability to recover up to 100 percent more d-Limonene than the traditional cold-pressed system, potentially increasing revenue.

For example, refer to the chart below.

d-Limonene Revenue vs Operating Expenses

If the selling price of d-Limonene is $0.95 USD, the cost of steam per 1,000 pounds is $30.12 USD and the usage of steam is 3,000 pounds per hour. At 3 percent emulsion, d-Limonene revenue using the READYGo d-LIMONENE is estimated at $800,000 USD after 1,500 operating hours and $1.6 million USD after nearly 3,000 operating hours. At 3,000 hours of operation, operating costs are estimated to be slightly more than $400,000.

READYGo d-LIMONENE is the newest addition to the READYGo family of citrus line add-ons that are built on skids, so they can be quickly and easily uncrated, hooked up, and ready to go.

A growing offering

JBT FoodTech engineers used knowledge gained from manufacturing custom-designed cold-pressed oil recovery systems to create the READYGo d-LIMONENE. All READYGo systems are simple and affordable solutions designed with smaller processors in mind. Read more about the READYGo family in Volume 5, Issue 4 of FoodTech Report.

Some READYGo solutions, such as READYGo CitruSan automatic extractor clean-up system, READYGo CONCENTRATE CHOPPER, READYGo JUICE and READYGo PUREE, were developed to fulfill the needs of a smaller processing line. Others, like READYGo d-LIMONENE, READYGo PULP and READYGo PULPWASH recovery systems, were created to help citrus processors turn by-products and waste into revenue-generating products.
