aseptic system

Process Technology Laboratory in Parma, Italy, opens pilot plant

A thermal processing pilot plant recently opened at the Process Technology Laboratory in Parma, Italy. The pilot plant has a thermal processing capacity of 4,400 pounds per hour (2,000 kg per hour) and is equipped with a fruit and vegetable aseptic system, tuna-cooking machines and a laboratory facility.

JBT FoodTech specialists work with processing customers to perform trials with the appropriate equipment using processor-supplied raw material, and are capable of assisting processors in the development and analysis of fruit and vegetable processing. Specialists also can provide consulting services for developing and implementing Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans, as well as plans and procedures to improve production quality assurance.

A sampling of recent feasibility studies that have been conducted include:

  • Tropical fruit puree deaeration and pasteurization 
  • Comparing frozen processes and aseptic processing to determine convenient and cost-effective solutions for product storage and distribution
  • Filling prepared sauces and condiments with the JBT FoodTech® SPACE™ Aseptic Filler into spoutless pouches to be used as samples in market testing
  • Utilizing the tuna pilot cooker and cooler to assess yield and performance in cooking different tuna varieties that are of particular interest to the industry

JBT FoodTech contract awards

JBT acquires Thailand-based businesses
JBT Corporation’s JBT FoodTech business has closed an agreement to acquire Thailand-based International Food Technology and Food Audits International. The acquisition of these companies strengthens JBT FoodTech’s regional capabilities to provide sterilization solutions, including food safety consulting, lab services, process auditing and training.  

JBT Corporation awarded citrus processing conversion contract
JBT Corporation’s JBT FoodTech business was recently awarded an exclusive contract in excess of $30 million for the supply of new citrus processing equipment to French group Louis Dreyfus Commodities (Dreyfus). The six-year operating lease agreement includes the conversion of all Dreyfus Brazil- and U.S.-based citrus processing facilities to JBT FoodTech citrus juice extractors and associated ancillary equipment. The project will be phased in over the next three years with all Dreyfus facilities fully converted to JBT FoodTech citrus extractors by 2013.  

JBT FoodTech awarded major freezing solutions orders
JBT FoodTech recently signed contracts valued at $5.4 million for the supply of freezing solutions to two Germany-based food processing plants. The contracts are with OSI Food Solutions GmbH, a German subsidiary of the Chicago-based OSI Group. The OSI Group is a global leader in providing quality food products to many of the world’s leading food companies and quick-service restaurants.

JBT FoodTech will supply one OSI plant with a higher-capacity, lower-operating-cost hamburger patty freezing line to replace cryogenic freezing lines. At another OSI plant, a new freezer system was designed for freezing poultry products and providing higher throughput and operating availability than existing equipment. Both new freezing solutions will utilize JBT FoodTech’s unique high-performance, energy-efficient FRIGoPAK® refrigeration system. The projects are scheduled for completion in 2010.  

JBT FoodTech awarded poultry processing contracts
JBT FoodTech recently signed contracts, valued at $5.5 million, with a major North American-based poultry processing company to supply portioning solutions. JBT FoodTech will supply DSI™ portioning systems and technical support to contribute to the customer’s objectives, which include increasing the sellable value of its poultry products. The added portioning capacity will improve operating efficiencies and further automate the customer’s processing capabilities. The project will be completed in 2010. 

JBT FoodTech people on the move

Rob Bable has joined the DSI sales and support team as Consistent Thickness Slicer™ product representative. Bable joined JBT FoodTech in 2004 as a food process technologist in the Food Processing Technology & Training Center in Sandusky, OH, U.S.A., before transitioning to freezer applications engineering and sales support. Bable holds a bachelor’s degree in biosystems engineering from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI.

Chad Goecke has joined the JBT FoodTech customer service management team as the food handling aftermarket manager. Goecke joined JBT FoodTech in 2003 and previously served as a buyer, in sourcing and as business planner. Goecke holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in business administration from Ashland University.

N’Gai Merrill has joined the JBT FoodTech In-Container Processing team as a global marketing manager. Merrill previously served as a strategic planner in the JBT corporate Chicago, IL, U.S.A. office. Merrill holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bob Porter has joined the JBT FoodTech In-Container Processing team as the area sales manager for the Midwestern region. Porter has broad knowledge and experience in the food industry and has extensive previous experience in both plant management and industrial machinery sales.

Suhail Khot has joined the JBT FoodTech In-Container Processing team as the areas sales manager for the eastern region. Khot is an experienced industrial food machinery sales leader with over 15 years in the industry. Khot holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Les Harrell has joined the JBT FoodTech Citrus Processing team as a regional account manager. Harrell comes from a family familiar with the Florida citrus industry and has experience in various aspects of the industry from citrus growing operations to selling crop protection chemicals as well as locally produced citrus concentrate and NFC juices. Harrell holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Georgia.

Process Expo and International Food Technology (IFT) Annual Meeting & Food Expo  July 18-20, 2010, in Chicago, IL, U.S.A. — Booth 13003

JBT FoodTech showcased its integrated food processing solutions including the latest technologies for filling, can seaming and sterilization, as well as a full spectrum of systems for freezing, cutting, coating, frying and cooking. Commencing in 2011 Process Expo will be located in Chicago and will move from an annual format to a biennial format with Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) as its sole sponsor.

International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE)  — Sept. 26-29, 2010, in Las Vegas, NV, U.S.A. — Booth 10015

IBIE is recognized as the world’s largest, most comprehensive baking exposition of the year. Attendees were able to view cutting-edge technologies, equipment and new products; and learn how to strengthen their competitive position, uncover new opportunities and maximize profits. JBT FoodTech featured the Double D™ Continuous Baking Oven, JBT FoodTech panless processing technology and a complete portfolio of bakery processing capabilities.

Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit  — Oct. 15-18, 2010, in Orlando, FL, U.S.A — in Booth 323

One of the largest international events solely dedicated to fruit, vegetables and floral, Fresh Summit draws more than 18,500 attendees from 50 countries annually. JBT FoodTech featured its Food Safety Services offering, a new addition to all service groups that includes pre-audit preparation, audit representation and post-audit maintenance. JBT FoodTech also introduced the DataPort™ data management package, an integrated electronic system that simplifies food safety record-keeping.

IPA 2010: World Food Process Exhibition  — Oct. 17-21, 2010, in Paris, France

IPA hosts an exhibition featuring food and beverage manufacturers looking for innovative and high-performance equipment and machinery. JBT FoodTech exhibited capabilities in coating, cooking, freezing, frying, filling, closing and sterilization.

Pack Expo — Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2010, in Chicago, IL, U.S.A — Booth E-6555

Pack Expo featured a full array of both packaging and processing innovations in addition to showcasing trends, technologies and integrated solutions to optimize operations across the line. The JBT FoodTech, exhibit, located in the new Processing Zone, featured filling, can seaming and sterilization technologies, as well as coating, frying, cooking and freezing systems.
