New acquisitions strengthen sterilization solutions for Asia-Pacific region

Food Safety

In many Asian countries, the middle class has been growing, and with this growth has come an increased demand for more convenience foods. Due to this trend, many food producers in the Asia-Pacific region have been investing in food processing and sterilization equipment to serve both regional domestic markets as well as export markets.

To serve the burgeoning Asia-Pacific region with complete food safety solutions, JBT FoodTech has acquired International Food Technology Co., Ltd. (IFT), and Food Audits International, Ltd. (FAI), both headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand. These food safety services include:

  • Food safety consultation and sterilization validation services
  • Lab services: sterilization labs in Ningbo, China; Madera, Calif., U.S.A.; and St. Niklaas, Belgium
  • Food plant auditing and product inspections
  • Training courses and workshops for food safety and food regulations

Food safety consulting

IFT is an internationally recognized food safety and quality consulting firm serving regional food processors exporting foods from Asia or global processors and retailers locally sourcing foods in Asia. IFT’s technical consulting and service offering include process validation for sterilization system, temperature distribution and heat penetration, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) planning assistance and training.

“Having a productive and cost-efficient food processing operation is important, but it also is crucial to be in compliance with food safety regulations before exporting to another country,” said Dan Brooks, director, technical consulting services for JBT FoodTech Asia-Pacific. “A regulatory compliance evaluation can make the difference between becoming a preferred provider and being rejected at the border.”

Food auditing

FAI offers food auditing and certification services to assist food processors in meeting food quality, safety and legal standards. FAI’s service offering includes providing food plant and product compliance inspections for Asia-based food processors, including the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard for Food Safety, generic Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations (GMP) and HACCP.

New U.S. food safety regulation

Signed into law in January 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has enacted the Food Safety Modernization Act, which will impact companies exporting products to the United States, including those in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Our specialty is in helping companies solve regulatory concerns with the FDA,” Brooks said. “It takes a special technique to rectify an FDA non-compliance issue in a way that is acceptable to the FDA. Also, some companies assume they are in compliance, but it is important to check first before exporting.”

JBT FoodTech offers training workshops on food safety and sterilization services as well as the new U.S. food safety regulations.
