When an operator enters the product initial temperature into the controller, it calculates, in real time, a NumeriCAL™ process time based upon NumeriCAL™ (model 101) heating and cooling factors and predetermined sterilizer heating and cooling profiles. The use of the NumeriCAL™ algorithm allows for shorter heating times, reduced steam consumption, lower final product temperatures, shorter cooling times, and reduced cooling water consumption.

The controller then precisely controls the batch retort to just above the minimum retort temperature and pressure setpoints for the given process. Any variation in temperature or pressure control which could endanger the target lethality is alarmed as a DEVIATION by the controller. An equivalent NumeriCAL™ process is calculated and applied. NumeriCAL™ On-Line retains all the benefits of previous proven system, including automatic record keeping, security, process safety, and FDA and USDA acceptance.
